The Ultimate 2D VTuber Avatar Live Streaming Software - Reallusion's Cartoon Animator 5

About a year and a half ago I started exploring VTuber software to see if I could turn my 2D, TET avatar into a live performance character that I could use when I record my Cartoon Animator tutorial videos.

I explored quite a number of applications but I couldn't really find one that I was able to adapt my avatar to. It was possible but the applications that could do it were either too basic or too complex, with poor documentation, requiring more time and expertise than I had.

Since then, Reallusion introduced their Puppet Stage to Cartoon Animator 5, and as far as I'm concerned, it rocketed past the competition as the best, most featured, and easiest to use software for VTuber's who want a 2D avatar, in any art style they can dream up. You're not limited to just Anime characters anymore.

What is the Puppet Stage?

Puppet Stage is specifically targeted at live streamers who represent themselves through cartoon avatars - commonly referred to as VTubers. Typically many of these people are gamers who have an avatar character on screen as they play their games.

Cartoon Animator gives you a stage window for your avatar, that is ideally suited to running through broadcast streaming software like OBS, so you don't see the rest of Cartoon Animator's User Interface.

2D Characters can be animated with multiple methods including live motion capture plus keyboard and mouse triggers.

It works with any G3 based character (Cartoon Animator's Standard Character format) which you can create from scratch, with your own artwork, or select one of thousands of free and paid characters created by Reallusion and independent developers from the Reallusion Marketplace.

What's most impressive is, once you have your character positioned on the stage, you can apply a free live stream Puppet Stage template profile, and you're all set up ready to stream. Just connect Cartoon Animator to your streaming software. No other VTuber software is that simple.

Of course you can make your own Puppet Stage profile, completely from scratch, which does have more of a learning curve. However you can do a lot with all the pre-made content and animations. It's conceivable that the only thing you'll want to fully customize is the artwork for your avatar.

Cartoon Animator 5's Puppet Stage Key Features

Motion Capture

Cartoon Animator's Motion Capture features all work with Puppet Stage. The Motion Live 2D Plugin is free but you will need to pay extra for a motion capture profile depending upon the level of motion capture you need.

The cheapest option is face motion capture through your webcam, which is fine to get you started. If you have the budget (and an iPhone) the iPhone face motion capture profile is far more responsive. Don't waste time with your webcam if the iPhone profile is an option for you. The difference is quite dramatic.

If you have the budget for various hand and full body mocap devices then you likely have the budget for the profiles needed to drive them. Check out the link for compatible devices.

Motion Pilot

Puppet Animation has always been a feature of Cartoon Animator but it became even more powerful with the introduction of Motion Pilot, a system that lets you easily program one, or even an entire flock of characters, with specific movements, that you can trigger or directly control with your mouse.

An obvious example for Puppet Stage is the ability to set up a walk cycle for your avatar, that you can trigger and control where your avatar walks on the stage using the mouse. Motion Pilot will handle the speed of the walk cycle, the direction, and where the character walks based on your mouse movement.

Camera Control

Another new addition to Cartoon Animator is the Multi-camera system that lets you set up standard and tracking cameras that you can switch between with a key press. Effortlessly switch between a close up of your avatar talking, to a wide shot when you're returning to game play, and even follow your avatar as they walk around.

Separate Body and Face Animations, or Combined

Quickly put together a whole deck of keyboard triggered motions from Cartoon Animator's pre-made motion library, or animate your own. Trigger just face, or just body motions, that can be mixed and matched, or trigger full character perform motions.

Keyboard triggers can be set to play once, loop continuously, or be controlled by mouse movement.

Auxiliary Animations

Animate props, emotional accents, swap out backgrounds and more. If it can be animated you can likely add it to the stage via a keyboard trigger to augment your character's environment and performance.

Flock Animation

Want to have a sequence where six or seven butterflies enter the scene and fly randomly around when you hit a trigger? Flock animation can make that happen. You can also have them fly in formation and follow your avatar around, if that's what you want too.

Free 30 Day Trial

While Cartoon Animator isn't free software you can get a free 30 day trial that is fully functional and includes Motion Live 2D plus the webcam motion capture profile (keep in mind the iPhone profile is much better if you have an iPhone and the additional budget).

If you decide to buy, it's a one time purchase. You only pay for full version level upgrades, and even then you get it discounted. Intermittent upgrades and bug fixes are free (and Reallusion are known to release major feature upgrades in between full version upgrades).

While your initial purchase may be for your VTuber ambitions, you're also getting a very powerful animation studio that would allow you to create complete animated shorts of your avatar in their own web series, if that's something you might like to try.

Not to mention the sheer amount of ready made content available in Reallusion's Marketplace. You could literally have a different avatar every day. Don't forget to take advantage of the many free characters developers make available too.

Beginners Start Here

If you're completely new to Cartoon Animator and want to get started with the absolute basics of making and animating your first character check out my free course at Make Animated Cartoons Free Course. The character you create will be quite simple but it will work with Cartoon Animator's Puppet Stage.

Inochi2D - Free Open Source 2D VTuber Avatar Rigging and Puppeteering Software (Part 1)

Inochi2D Creator - Free Open Source VTuber Software. If you've been looking for a way to live perform as a 2D cartoon avatar on camera, whether it be for a live stream or for pre-recorded content like educational videos, then VTuber software is a low cost (or even no cost) option worth looking into. In my previous post, How to Become a VTuber - 2D and 3D Software for Creating and Controlling Your Avatar , I took a brief look at the relatively new but completely free and open source Inochi2D  which I thought showed great potential for my own needs of creating a live performance character rig for my own TET Avatar that I use for all my promotional materials. While it is possible to live perform my character using Cartoon Animator itself, Reallusion's MotionLive2D capture system isn't great - with lip sync in particular. More importantly though, I can't exactly teach people how to use Cartoon Animator if I'm using Cartoon Animator to control my Avatar. What is Inochi2D...

LTX Studio (Beta): AI-Powered Visual Storytelling, From Script to Screen in One App.

LTX Studio can generate consistent characters across storyboard panels - even if one character is a dragon! W hile text to image, and text to video (and image to video) AI tend to be getting a lot of the press, the real exciting aspect of generative AI implementation is how it can be used to speed up creator workflow. Being able to realize your creative vision in a shorter length of time can lead to more ambitious projects. Particularly if you're a team of one, with a very limited budget, but you one day dream of creating your own epic animated feature film. LTX Studio (beta), a new 'all-in-one' AI film making tool, is not going to let you realize that dream from a single text prompt but, by bringing a bunch of generative AI technologies together, the developers have created a one platform workflow that can help anyone rapidly visualize and deliver a story from initial idea to finished film in days rather than weeks (depending upon how ambitious the project is). Even bette...

Review: Toon Boom Harmony 14 - What I learned in 21 Days

Toon Boom Harmony is widely considered the industry standard for primarily 2D animation. You don't get to be that if your software isn't exceptional. However, industry standard and exceptional usually translates to steep learning curve and probably contains more features than I'll ever use. So, in reviewing the latest version, Harmony 14, I'm setting out to answer two questions; How easy is it to learn the basics and is it software an independent artist/animator, like myself, should seriously consider as their go to, 2D animation studio of choice?

Krita AI Diffusion - Generative Image AI For Krita is Seriously Useful, Powerful and Free (If You Can Install it Locally)

Generative AI sequence of a woman in a business suit. From sketch to refined image using Krita AI Diffusion - by TET G enerative image AI, where you describe an image with a text prompt to an Artificial Intelligence model and it produces a new image based on your prompt, is gaining a strong hold as a tool for many artists. Krita AI Diffusion brings generative AI image tools right into your favourite free and opensource, graphics editor, Krita. Not only that, if you have a computer with decent specs (and at least 10GB of hard drive space), Krita AI Diffusion is completely free. What If I Don't Have a Powerful Computer? If you're in my situation, with a computer that was around before anyone in the mainstream had even heard of generative AI, you can still access Krita AI Diffusion for free, using a cloud based AI server, Interstice  and 300 tokens, to get you started. Once your initial tokens run out, purchase 5000 more for 10€ (approx US$11.00). Tokens never expire. I would...

Reallusion's Cartoon Animator Versus PixVerse Image to Video and Lip Sync AI - Battle of the Talking Head Avatars

PixVerse's Show Muscle Effect is a real flex for other AI generative video sites. AI  generated digital avatars have improved greatly over the last 12 months, to the point where you can replace yourself with a digital, talking head, clone avatar that can say anything using your AI generated voice clone, and casual viewers wouldn't even notice. I tried cloning myself back in July of 2024 in my post,  Creating an AI Digital Avatar and Voice Clone of Myself with Free and Low Cost AI Tools . Since then, I've seen human clone channels on YouTube that I'd never guess in passing were digital humans. This is one of Hedra's better generations of video using my TET Avatar as a source. One area that has been slower to catch up is using AI to create 2D cartoon style avatars, from very specific character designs, that don't have realistic human proportions. I put my TET Avatar through Hedra , one of the best talking head avatar generators currently available, and got a compl...

The Ultimate Independent Animator's App and Resource List - Animation and Video Life

Image created with Cartoon Animator 4. Being an independent animator is not like a studio animation job. There's so much more to do that is indirectly related to the actual task of animating. Over the years I've sought out many apps, tools, and services that can help me achieve that one single task, expressing myself through animation. Below is my Ultimate Independent Animator's Resource List for 2024 (last updated Oct 2024). It started out as a list of free or low cost apps that could help you in every stage of producing either 2D or 3D animation, and then just kind of grew from there. You may not have been looking for a Time Management App as much as you needed something to get you started in 3D animation but when those commissioned projects start coming in you'll have a head start on maximizing your time. All the apps and services on this list had to meet two main criteria: They had to be useful and relevant to an Indy Animator/artist. The base app/se...

Glif (Alpha) - Make Your Own Tiny AI Powered Niche Image Generator Apps

I  first heard about Glif through a YouTube video that mentioned you could get access to Flux Pro (the latest 'game changer AI' generative image model) through the site for free. While I had a vague notion from the video of what Glif was, I wasn't expecting it to be so easy to get started with, and so good with my very first results. Glif is an easy to use, low-code platform for creating tiny AI-powered generators called Glifs. While that may not sound inspiring, what Glifs allow you to do is create a tiny app that niches down to a specific type of AI generation that the user modifies with their own inputs. The best way to really understand is with an example.  My First Glif I've recently been using VivaGo's AI platform  (free and unlimited at the time of writing) to consistently generate full body characters in a front facing T-Pose that I can rig as front facing characters in Cartoon Animator. Unfortunately it can be a bit hit or miss maintaining the T-Pose part...
